In this beginners drawing course you will be guided through a series of important techniques that you can use to improve your drawing. Each week you will be guided through these techniques with step by step demonstrations showing you their importance and overall results they add to your work. Come and join our 6 week course and take your drawing skills to the next level.
Course Outline
Week 1 – 27th April: Perspective
To start you off on this beginners drawing course Jaclyn will introduce you to perspective drawing. Perspective drawing is used to create a 3-dimensional effect and linear depth. This technique is important as it gives your drawings a true sense of what is being viewed at the time of drawing.
Week 2 – 4th May: Ellipses and Cylinders
Ellipses and cylinders are geometrical shapes that can really improve your drawings. Once mastered you will find that you will incorporate these in so much of your drawings. Jaclyn will demonstrate how to correctly uses these shapes to create a 3 dimensional look to circular and curved aspects of your drawings.
Week 3 – 11th May: How to Measure, Guidelines and Angles
This week Jaclyn will guide you through the process of measuring, guidelines and angles with a step by step demonstration to enable you to truly represent what you want to draw. When selecting a scene or an object to draw it is important to know how to scale the scene to create a likeness in your drawings.
Week 4 – 18th May: Breaking objects into basic shapes, negative and positive space
When broken down all drawings can be split up into different shapes in order to create the overall result. This week you will learn about using positive and negative shapes to create depth and focus to your drawings to draw the eye towards more important aspects of your finished piece.
Week 5 – 25th May: Basics in composition
Learning the basics in composition is a great way to improve your drawings. Depending on the complexity of your drawing they can easily become too busy and messy but Jaclyn will show you how to structure your work to ensure a well balanced and clean finish to your work.
Week 6 – 1st June: Strength of line and line drawings
To finish of this course Jaclyn will highlight the importance of line strength and line drawings. This technique is used to define shapes and figures and highlight areas of your work. A very easy technique to master and one that will greatly improve your work.

What you’ll need:
To join this 6 week Beginners drawing course, our tutor suggest that you have the following materials.
- You will need a set of graded pencils. The tutor recommends these pencils.
- An Eraser
- A kneadable putty rubber. The tutor recommends this Putty rubber.
- A3 cartridge paper. The tutor recommends this A3 paper
- still life objects such as fruit and a bowl
Your Tutor
Jaclyn Stuart is an artist who works in St Andrews Scotland. She graduated from Grays School of Art with a BA Hons in Fine Art in 2000. She has taught art in many establishments including lecturing in Further Education. She now runs her own teaching business in St Andrews along with making and selling her own artwork. She works in watercolour, acrylics, oils and inks.
